In pictures: The southwestern flower village prepares for the Tet holiday

The Cai Mon flower village in Ben Tre province and the Sa Dec flower village in Dong Thap province are the main flower planting areas in the southwestern region. Two months before the lunar New Year, the villages are very bustling.

Bamboo flower baskets like this are priced at VND2,000-VND2,200/unit. A 25kg bag of coconut shell dust is priced VND5,000. The most important task is making flowers bloom at Tet. Most of flower trees have been planted in pots to prepare for the Tet. Flower prices are expected to be 5-10 percent higher than last Tet because the prices for inputs this year rise. Cai Mon village will supply 4.5-5 million flower pots to the market this Tet, including 1.7 million yellow apricot trees. Chrysanthemum is the main product of Sa Dec flower village and it is the indispensable flower during the Tet in the south. The prices for yellow daisies are expected to rise because of a bad harvest. In the flood season, flower pots are placed on high frames. In addition to flowers, ornamental and bonsai trees are also expected to be favored by customers in this year’s Tet festival. Sa Dec flower village is about 335ha with more than 3,600 workers. The village is the home to about 50 varieties of roses. The village also exports flowers to several neighboring countries such as Cambodia, Thailand or Taiwan.
