Thai ethnic group dresses to impress

With a population of more than one million living in different regions across the country, the Thai ethnic group has various styles of dress in keeping with customs and aesthetic conceptions.

The traditional clothing of Black Thai ethnic women living in Điện Biên province’s Mường Phăng district is a prime example.

Visitors to the northwest region will often catch sight of beautiful Thai ethnic women wearing short jackets, long black skirts and colourful “piêu” scarves.

Since early childhood, these women have been taught how to weave brocade – a traditional profession of the Thai ethnic group.

Though life has changed a great deal, Black Thai ethnic women still wear the vibrant “piêu” scarves – full of diverse colours and sophisticated patterns that highlight the women’s beautiful faces.

A “piêu” scarf is also a mark of skill. Most Thai ethnic girls at 15-16 years old have to embroider their own “piêu” scarves to prepare for future marriage.
