Not many people noticed that the railroad in Da Lat is a kind of rare and unparalleled cog railroad in the world.
Da Lat is a plateau city which is regarded as an oasis in the mountain. Being a Vietnamese city but Da Lat reminds people of an image of France: French climate and architecture. One of the most unique French monuments to recommend is Da Lat railway (also Crémaillère Railway Station)
The station is constructed by French from 1932 to 1938 and it is the most still-existed ancient station in Vietnam. In 2001, the railway station was recognized by Ministry of Culture and Information as a national cultural site. It is a stunning piece of architecture, and the largely French style is complemented by architectural gestures toward the cottage style of ethnic minorities from the Central Highlands (called Nha Rong)
The station shaped as the mighty Lang Biang mountain, with 66,5m in length, 11,4m in width and 11m in height. The architecture resembles the station in Southern France (2 arch roofs). Look from a side, you will see 3 pointed roofs merging skyward.
Look from its facade, there are 3 pointed triangles on the tops of roofs symbolizing for 3 Lang Biang peaks and the bottoms for the mountains’ slopes.
At present Da Lat railway station only provides tourists. With 7km route, it will take the tourists around the city for spectacular views.
Despite its low speed and loud noise, this is still an attraction to tourists.
Almost everyone knows that Da Lat has the most beautiful and original railway station in Southeast Asia, uniquely designed in Art Deco style – a popular style in Europe and all the world in the early of 20th Century (1925-1939)
However not many people noticed that the railroad in Da Lat is kind of a rare and unparalleled cog railroad in the world.
